Our Clients

The work of the Spitalfields Crypt Trust, was, until May 2002, designed primarily for clients who had not or were not likely to benefit from more intensive therapeutic programmes. This group included those who have been on the streets for a long time and needed some structure and support, but were not ready for a highly demanding programme.

However, since Acorn House opened, things have changed, and very much for the benefit of all concerned. Our hopes and expectations are considerably higher, and we are seeing the fruit that our work and our clients deserve.

Residents and staff being introduced to Princess Alexandra during the official visit she made to open the new Centre. Everyone was delighted with the interest that she took in all of the people that she spoke with. It really was a day to remember for all concerned.

The therapeutic programme includes a Group Meeting each week day, one-to-one counselling and keyworking, and encouragement to take up various activities from a wide selection available. All at a pace appropriate to each individual resident. The thing that counts most highly with the residents, that allows them to settle in and feel comfortable and safe, is the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and the helpful attitude of the staff and other residents. This is the best foundation for rehabilitation that we know.

Admission to the Crypt has never solely been dependant upon securing a Community Care funding commitment. We have always been prepared to consider anyone for entry onto our programme on the basis of need rather than finance.

Here, a group of residents, accompanied by a staff member, are trying their hands at punting in Cambridge. As you can see, there was a slight collision, but no harm was done!
