Introduction

The Spitalfields Crypt Trust was established as a registered charity in 1965, and for more than 40 years has been at the forefront of work with homeless alcoholics across London. Its primary aim is to provide residential care and rehabilitation for homeless men who have problems with alcohol dependency. Since the year 2000, a great deal has happened. Today, we look at ourselves as an organisation and we are amazed at how much things have progressed. Our work with the homeless, the alcoholic, the addicted, and the lonely continues apace. We have a history of which we are proud, but our plans for the future are innovative and exciting.

Our main place of work was for 35 years in the Crypt of Christ Church, Spitalfields. Sadly this site was closed down as it was not able to provide the level of accommodation that was necessary for a residential care home. Happily, we have been able to secure a brand new site for our work, which opened in March 2002. This new project has been named Acorn House, and now we will be able to offer residents the 'luxury' of their own room with a door and a window! A wonderful building however, counts for nothing, if within it there are not committed and caring staff working alongside residents, implementing a range of tried and tested interventions. We are delighted therefore, to have secured the services of a new staff team of Christian men and women, and will work hard to ensure that the quality, individual service that we offered in the Crypt for 35 years, is not only replicated in Acorn House, but improved.
