Charity Shops In 5 short years, the work that we commenced so nervously in a small shop near Petticoat Lane? has really grown and blossomed into something far greater than we could have dreamed of. In April 2000 we opened our 5th shop, in Roman Road, Bow. The income from the shops has been invaluable, and we possibly would not exist at all today without it. Money, however important it might be, is certainly not the only benefit they have brought to our organisation. Indeed, I believe that the communities around each shop also benefit in lots of ways. ![]() Princess Alexandra chatting to some staff and volunteers at the Watney Market Charity Shop. Many people find great enjoyment and a sense of value and purpose from volunteering in a charity shop. At the time of writing 10 people are employed full time, 8 of whom were previously unemployed. Also, many young people make their first steps into the world of employment by undertaking New Deal placements with us. Quite a large number of residents from our houses have become involved with the shops, making a real contribution both to our work and their own rehabilitation. They also enjoy and benefit from meeting new people and doing something interesting. ![]() Some of our Shop Staff relaxing in the gardens of St. Leonard's Churchyard prior to the visit of Her Royal Highness. From left to right they are Angela Cook, Caroline Evans, Molly Le Gras, Linda Williams and Steve Le Gras. This Charity shop work is heavily dependent upon the selfless generosity of so many people who give their time and energy to help us. There are too many to thank here, but I hope that each knows who they are and that we are grateful for all that they do. If you ever want to speak to anyone concerned with these shops, the main telephone number is 020 7791 0200 and you should ask for Frances the shop manager, or Stella the General manager. Volunteers are always needed, as are donations of clothing, furniture or Bric-a-Brac. |
